Hello, and welcome to this week’s Horizon Line Madison! While the Oscar season rolls on, we’re getting our first chances to look ahead for our 2025 film season. The Wisconsin Film Festival has announced its First Look at the Fest screening at Flix Brewhouse on March 5th, including food and drink alongside the curated program of film trailers. They’ll publish the full festival program the next day, and ticket sales will go up March 8th.
In new release, we have a battle between the four-quadrant blockbusters Captain America: Brave New World, Ne Zha 2, and Paddington in Peru - the continued, staggered screenings of the Best Picture nominees - and Valentine’s themed screenings of Challengers, Love Hurts, and Heart Eyes. It’s a lower-key week at UW Cinematheque and MMOCA, with crime drama Sujo and gay romance Viet and Nam making their Madison debuts.
However, our repertory screenings are absolutely stuffed with options, largely themed around Valentine’s Day and Black History Month. There’s screenings of great films like When Harry Met Sally, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Do The Right Thing, Casablanca, Claudine, and Coming to America, some at our usual repertory campus programs but even more at our commercial theaters.
Next week, the one wide release is The Monkey - I’m personally very excited for UW Cinematheque’s screening of On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, the new film from I Am Not A Witch filmmaker Rungano Nyoni. The first half of Marcus’s Best Picture Marathon will be on Saturday the 22nd, with the second half scheduled for March 1st. And in repertory, the black history month celebration continues with screenings of Love & Basketball, Coffy, and Crooklyn. The library film series Cinesthesia also returns with Something Wild on Wednesday the 26th. And, looking ahead one more week, the wider releases for the weekend of the 28th are Woody Harrelson/Simu Liu thriller Last Breath and Sonequa Martin-Green/Natalie Morales comedy My Dead Friend Zoe, maybe signaling a good weekend for UW Cinematheque’s screening of The Passion of Joan of Arc.

“The antics of the human actors pull focus too often away from Paddington and Whishaw’s gentle, magical vocal performance.
But this is still a Paddington movie, and if it doesn’t live up to the first two films, it’s still bright, cheerful, refreshingly un-cynical fun.” - Rob Thomas
