Screening Report 2/5/2025
Adding the Bartell Theater and La Cineteca Italiana - as full a schedule as ever!
Hello, friends, and welcome back to The Horizon Line as we start the second month of 2025. I attended my first screening at the Bartell Theater’s $5 Film Series this weekend, seeing Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and I had a great time. The venue is serving wine and beer alongside concessions, and the screening started without much delay. The programmer hosting the event shared that the Bartell is hoping to curate more series in the same model in the future, aiming to bring two more films to join Hundreds of Beavers the weekend of March 27-29. I’ll be continuing to add their screenings, and I’ll also be adding La Cineteca Italiana to our repertory calendar going forward.
The wide releases across our theaters this week are the slasher-with-a-silly-premise Heart Eyes and the Ke Huy Quan action vehicle Love Hurts, both enjoying a pre-Valentine’s Day levity. In arthouse fare, I’d direct you toward I’m Still Here, the Brazilian drama starring Fernanda Torres up for three Oscars, including Best Picture. If you’re still catching up on new releases, I’ll point to decreasing screenings of Presence and Nosferatu indicating those two might be in their last week.
In repertory, the week is absolutely stuffed. Last week’s screening of The Wages of Fear has been rescheduled to 4pm on Friday after a technical issue, creating a double feature with its remake (or, as Friedkin would prefer, “adaptation of the same material”) Sorcerer. That’s programmed with a half hour break between the films, so be aware that you’ll need to eat a big meal before The Wages of Fear if you intend to attend both screenings. It’s also programmed the same night as WUD Film is screening the excellent Chungking Express, Wong Kar Wai’s breakthrough romantic anthology. Saturday marks the screening of Seven Samurai at UW Cinematheque, which I recommend arriving early for, as it’s likely to fill up quickly.
Next week marks the arrival of two major franchise films, Captain America: Brave New World and Paddington in Peru. MMOCA is also continuing its cinema series with Viet and Nam, a film nominated for the Queer Palme in 2024. There are a number of repertory screenings themed around the Valentine’s holiday, including Portrait of a Lady on Fire at WUD Film, Notting Hill and When Harry Met Sally at Flix Brewhouse, and Ghost at AMC - you’ll also notice that Fathom is running a Harry Potter screening series of the first four films, though no dates have been set yet for the second half of the saga. Lastly, looking ahead at the weekend of the 22nd, the only major new release set for multiplexes is The Monkey, which has a preview screening scheduled for the 12th at Marcus Point.
PLUG ZONE
Rob Thomas has multiple reviews out this week. First, I’ll point to his review of UW Cinematheque premiere Dead Mail! Next, his review of the high concept science fiction romance film Love Me. He also has two reviews out for Sundance festival films Twinless and Didn’t Die.
Jason Furhman published an article diving deep into the art of pairing film and food centered around Madison area restaurants and upcoming screenings, a follow-up to his article last year.
