Screening Report 5/13/26

Vengeance, hustlers, and an abbreviated report.

Hello, and welcome to this week’s screening report! This will be an abbreviated report, as we have a somewhat abbreviated schedule this week. In new releases, I’d like to highlight Is God Is, an adaptation of the award-winning play exploring vengeance and generational trauma. Lifehack and Obsession also boast some positive horror buzz, and while The Wizard of the Kremlin’s gotten some pretty divisive reactions, the new film from Irma Vep/Clouds of Sils Maria director Olivier Assayas is probably the closest we can get to Cannes from Madison, WI this week.

Side Room Cinematheque is celebrating its one year anniversary tomorrow night at Aftershock! Congratulations on a year of experimental, alternative programming. Cinesthesia also offers Menace II Society next week, the Hughes brothers’ hustling film a highlight of an otherwise familiar rep lineup (though maybe I’ll catch favorite Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon while it’s around too!)

Next week, I have appointment viewing for Boots Riley’s new crime comedy I Love Boosters, and I may finally make it out to see Godzilla Minus One - otherwise, it’s a thin lineup for me, having left Star Wars behind with The Rise of Skywalker. Lastly, the week of 5/29, we’ll see the release of liminal post-internet horror film Backrooms, “clean comedy” dadfailure movie The Breadwinner, and D-Day invasion film Pressure.
