Screening Report 5/20/2026
Go see I Love Boosters for me!
Hello, everyone, and welcome to this week’s screening report! WUD Film and Cinematheque have both announced their exciting full summer lineups - I’ll be working on my summer preview roundup, though it may come with a longer turnaround time than I’ve managed in the past.
The major event this week is The Mandalorian and Grogu, which, even despite lukewarm reception, will likely dominate the box office (and the total number of screening times) for the next month or so. Of the other films releasing, only Boots Riley’s I Love Boosters is a hit with critics so far - starring Keke Palmer and a large ensemble of fellow fashion shoplifters targeting Demi Moore’s plagiarizing designer, the follow-up to Sorry to Bother You sounds like it is similarly more entertaining than solely incisive. The colorful film is my most anticipated until Spielberg’s Disclosure Day - very happy to get another chance after missing the WUD preview. In repertory, Arrietty is not a favorite of mine among the Ghibli catalog, but I may try to make it out to finally see the acclaimed Godzilla Minus One.
Next week’s lineup is somewhat sparse - I expect most people know which film appeals to them between viral “it came from online” horror film Backrooms, father-is-a-wholesome-putz comedy The Breadwinner, or the precipice-of-D-Day film Pressure. But the best of the week might be TIFF thriller Tuner, a Damien Chazelle-ish heist riff about a musician-turned-safecracker and reviewed quite well at the festival. If you did want an anime winner, Michael Arias’s Tekkonkinkreet is an ambitious, delightful dystopian romp that goes huge in a way that reminded me of FLCL. And WUD Film will kick off the Terrace season with perhaps the ultimate 90s special boy object, Space Jam. Coming the week of June 5th, we’ll see the releases of Masters of the Universe, the sixth Scary Movie, and the “maybe-going-to-shock-the-box-office-sensation?” The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act.
