Screening Report 5/27/2026
By the power of the Backrooms!
Hello, and welcome to this week’s screening report! I’m still plugging away on that season preview for WUD and Cinematheque - hoping to have it to you before WUD starts next week with Space Jam, but if not - hey, Space Jam is playing on my birthday to kick off the Terrace season! Unfortunately, Marcus Palace has not updated its lineup for this week yet, presumably due to the Memorial Day holiday, but because I am traveling for work tomorrow, I’m gonna release today and hope it lines up fairly well with what’s playing at Point.
This week’s new releases are slow to lift their embargoes, with only Tuner boasting strong reviews coming into the writing of this report. Backrooms has certainly become something of a viral horror film in regard to marketing, and I’m curious to see how it performs against the still-gaining-momentum Obsession this next week. The WW2 pre-D-Day film Pressure premiered on Monday to sneak preview crowds, and the consensus appears to be that it a perfectly entertaining if fairly familiar war procedural. And, apologies, I’m sure some people will find The Breadwinner very funny, but I’m having a hard time taking Nate Bargatze seriously after finding out he’s trying to open a theme park in Nashville themed around his own life, which is something I barely think Eddie Murphy or Robin Williams could have pulled off - and Bargatze is no Eddie Murphy. In rep this week, outside of Space Jam, I will encourage people to see anime film Tekkonkinkreet if they have fond memories of FLCL or other similarly ambitious, slightly messy stories. And if you haven’t, there’s a still-ongoing movement to reclaim Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence as one of his very best.
Next week’s lineup is also generally unreviewed at this time, so it’s hard to assess where your priorities might lie. Power Ballad, the new film from Once/Sing Street director John Carney, is batting as a lesser effort thus far, though his fans still might find something to love there. Masters of the Universe and Scary Movie are hardly the most reputable franchises out there, but if you’re interested in seeing either, you probably don’t need me to pitch them to you. The Amazing Digital Circus is the sort of viral, cult phenomenon I associate with Homestuck and Undertale, and, again, if you’re part of its audience, you probably already are evangelizing to anyone who will listen that it’s “actually really good.” Peddi is a new film starring RRR’s Ram Charan, a sports action epic only playing the 3rd and 4th. If all of that is burning you out, maybe stick to the Pride Programming of Whip It, Milk, and The Birdcage, or revisit Trainspotting at AMC. Looking ahead to the weekend of the 12th, we’ll see the releases of Steven Spielberg’s alien thriller Disclosure Day and RuPaul comedy Stop! That! Train!
