Screening Report 6/10/2026
Disclosure Day, The Furious and some solid rep screenings!
Hello, and welcome to this week’s newsletter! The Bartell has announced a series of screenings for the first weekend of July, starting with a collection of fan favorites and concluding with the belated Madison premiere of Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets in collaboration with Four Star Video. Unfortunately, my brain’s in Gamer Mode after the unveiling of another Kingdom Hearts 4 teaser, so I have little else to remark on in the realm of film news.
The early summer continues to move a little slowly, though this weekend offers two gems. Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day is receiving rave reviews, not unlike his last two films West Side Story and The Fabelmans. The Fabelmans is my very favorite of Spielberg’s films, so I recognize I have some bias in maintaining respect for his work even in his latter years, but this is probably my most anticipated film of the year. I am also interested in The Furious, which has received some very exciting reviews from action critics excited by its ambitious, forward-thinking stunt work.
Speaking of forward thinking - I’ve already spilled a bunch of digital ink on how Speed Racer is a special vision of an alternative future where the 2010s were dominated by a imaginative, dreamlike visual candy rush rather than the drab realism of what actually happened, and we’ll get one more chance to see it big and loud at the WUD Film program next Monday. What I haven’t written about before is the first ever X-rated Best Picture winner, Midnight Cowboy, starring Jon Voight as a hick hustler and Dustin Hoffman as his junkie manager. It’s been several years since I’ve seen it, but I’ve come to believe Midnight Cowboy is actually underrated at this point. Where Bonnie & Clyde breaks open the New Hollywood, Midnight Cowboy feels like the language solidifying into its mature form - it may not be in my ten favorite Best Picture winners ever, but it’s high on my list!
While Toy Story 5 is the biggest release of next weekend, Leviticus is the critical heavyweight looking ahead of time. Probably too dismissively described as “gay It Follows,” Leviticus premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received pretty universal praise, so it’s more of a sure thing than “can Pixar really pull off another Toy Story sequel?” While I’m not a fan of Michael Sarnoski’s acclaimed Nicolas Cage film Pig, his The Death of Robin Hood will hopefully maintain Sarnoski’s control of tone and performance - and while the trailer for Hayley Kiyoko’s Girls Like Girls probably gives away too much of the already-familiar “blossoming gay romance in homophobic small town America” narrative, the film could merit closer attention. Looking ahead to the weekend of June 26th, we’ll see the arrival of UW Cinematheque’s Bleak Week, Supergirl, and Jackass: Best and Last.
