Screening Report 6/18/2026
They paved paradise (lost) and put up a parking lot
Hello, and welcome to this week’s screening report. The most pivotal news this week in Madison film is undeniably that they are finally, after years of some of the craziest potholes I’ve ever seen, resurfacing the AMC Fitchburg lot. A fair warning that as of the time of this writing, the lot is still only half-paved, requiring most guests to park across the street, and causing the people parking in the lot now to park…poorly. While our trips to AMC may be impacted by the renovation in the short-term, I’m genuinely kind of relieved to not worry about my car getting shredded, especially in the winter.
It’s a surprisingly busy weekend for them to choose, though, with the newest sequel to the Toy Story franchise garnering characteristically positive reviews. There’s also queer horror film Leviticus, seemingly riffing on the premise of It Follows, holding onto its largely positive reception after its festival opening earlier this year. Michael Sarnoski’s The Death of Robin Hood and Hayley Kiyoko’s Girls Like Girls are mustering more positive reviews than I expected as well, though the praise is generally warm and not glowing. Next week’s commercial fare primarily comes down to a battle between Supergirl and Jackass: Best and Last, the final installment for the original cast of Buster Keaton descendants.
The rep lineup for the next two weeks is fairly strong even not accounting for UW Cinematheque’s Bleak Week programming - WUD has two winners in Bend It Like Beckham and Challengers, Flix has two winners in Midsommar and The Muppet Movie, and AMC has two winners in Moonlight and To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar. There’s also the broader anniversary releases of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Ocean’s Eleven, and Talladega Nights. Perhaps the biggest surprise is anime release Adolescence of Utena, an essential queer anime film but hardly part of the standard rotation. Bleak Week rolls right into Cinematheque’s opening week - the week of the July 4th weekend, which already includes one July 1st premiere, will also debut Minions & Monsters and Young Washington.
