Screening Report 6/3/2026
A lot of noise this week, but some exciting stuff ahead!

Hello, and welcome to this week’s screening report!
I’m going to admit: I’m just not very moved by this week’s new releases. Reviews so far for the reboot of Masters of the Universe are a little kinder than I expected, and Power Ballad seems to continue to deliver John Carney’s classic musical pleasures. (I’m not a fan, though Sing Street was solid.) Dinner in America/Snack Shack director Adam Rehmeier is back with lovers on the run riff Carolina Caroline, but it’s not quite as well loved as the former. The Amazing Digital Circus and Scary Movie certainly have opportunity to surpass my expectations. I’m excited to see Whip It on the Terrace on Monday, and I might finally get to catch up with Mike Nichols’ The Birdcage after missing it last summer.
Next week’s schedule is slim, but it’s anchored by one of the summer’s most exciting films in Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day. Negative outlook decries it as “like Close Encounters of the Third Kind again” - that movie rules, and Josh O’Connor rules! I’m fascinated by the indie anime film Jinsei, a one hundred year look at the life of an artist and oracle casting out toward 2095. An endorsement from action fan Brandon Streussnig makes The Furious sound like a must-see for action fans! And Stop! That! Train! combining Drag Race alums and the direction of Hairspray director Adam Shankman may result in a tame whimper or a laughing riot. Looking ahead to the week of June 19th, we’ll see the release of Toy Story 5, Leviticus, Girls Like Girls, and The Death of Robin Hood.
