A belated report bears an unusual film week.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

Hello, and welcome to this week’s screening report! I apologize for the delay - we celebrated the birthday of Cinesthesia programmer Jason Furhman (go see Full Metal Jacket on Tuesday!) and took care of a sick puppy this week. (She’s fine, she just ate too much grass.) The world of cinema instead looks to a depressing Letterboxd buyout. As a community in Madison, we will continue to do this work of loving film and celebrating together for the love of the art itself and the people we celebrate it with.

This week’s new releases are headlined by a hopefully-moribund trend with the live-action Disney remake of Moana, aiming for dreadful box office and savage reviews. The constellation around it is more warmly received, though, with Olivia Wilde’s Virginia Woolf?-inspired sexual dramedy The Invite, David Wain sex comedy Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, erotic thriller Night Nurse, and I’ve-heard-it’s-essential indie comedy Maddie’s Secret. I’d wager all four of these are the kind of movie you’re going to see on someone’s top 10 list at the end of the year and say “I’ve never even heard of that!” But you did. You heard about it right now. And Monday will offer The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou at the Terrace, so it’s a good week ahead.

Next week they’re releasing The Odyssey, and I expect little will want to compete. There’ll be an Evangelion fan film event - Death & Rebirth recap the TV series, so if you want to barely comprehend End of Evangelion like many of those who’ve seen the whole saga several times, you’re welcome to get in on films so bleak they make the Bleak Week lineup look…okay, still not exactly, cheery, but…

The week after The Odyssey looks quiet too, but we may see some festival picks, including Neon’s Cannes pickup of Her Private Hell, the divisive (aren’t they all?) new film from Nicolas Winding Refn.

PLUG ZONE

-Moving Image Madison previews the MMoCA Rooftop Cinema series, covers the cinema season and best movies thus far in 2026, and shares info on Second Sunday Meetups. (I can’t thank James enough for his diligent work - having two screening reports hopefully helps when one of us has a busy week like this one!)
