Hello, and welcome to this week’s screening report. As I’m sure many in our Madison film community are aware, the biggest story of the week is the campus cooling failure which will take the month of July to repair. That means that UW Cinematheque has cancelled its summer program, hoping to reprogram the lineup for future Cinematheque screenings. It’s a sad blow to the classic film community here in Madison, especially as “going to the movies” is a classic summer day cool-off, and Minions & Monsters feels like a failure to match our vibe.
We still have some non-commercial programming playing, though. The Bartell Theater has its film lineup this weekend combining hit docs (Bloody Nose Empty Pockets, Mr. Nobody Against Putin) with classic faves (Jaws, Grease.) MMOCA Rooftop Cinema will return on July 30th with avant-garde and international cinema. Cinesthesia continues on with its screening of Full Metal Jacket on Tuesday the 14th. And while some food options are changed at Memorial Union South, the Lakeside Cinema series on the Terrace is continuing on unaffected, at least so long as films are able to remain outdoors. (The commercial theaters, outside of summer kids programming, do have an anniversary run of Citizen Kane running.)
In terms of new releases, while Minions & Monsters is getting better reviews than expected, it’s a week of very low-profile releases. If you’re Backrooms-pilled, there’s a version releasing this week with 15 minutes of additional footage. Next weekend is maybe a little stronger, with strong reviews for David Wain’s meta-comedy Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, Olivia Wilde’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf riff The Invite, and Sundance hit erotic thriller Night Nurse. I have a little less faith in the Moana live-action remake (okay, a lot less, WHY DOES THIS EXIST???) and Evil Dead Burn, but that’s some solid counterprogramming all the same. Looking ahead to the weekend of 7/17, expect new releases to make way for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
