Screening Report 8/12/2026
An end of summer blast and a newly busted Marcus website.
Hello, and welcome to this week’s screening report! This week last year, UW Cinematheque revealed its Fall 2025 calendar. Supposedly, the full campus is operational again after this summer’s campus cooling malfunctions - I’ve certainly missed Cinematheque this summer and hope we get to hear about our return soon. If Cinematheque does publish its schedule this week, I’ll work to get a preview up and posted by the end of the weekend.
Unfortunately, once and for all, Marcus has broken the ability to link to their movies - you now need to manually enter not just the title of the movie (as has worked for the past several months since their godawful redesign, which will show you a dozen movies not out for a month before films with multiple screentimes today!) but also now enter individualized codes for each movie to account for remakes and films with the same title. I do not plan to link to the Marcus website for showtimes until they fully redesign their website again to allow me to see only films that are actually playing on a given day and copy-paste their hub pages. Apologies for any inconvenience. (If they go on to break showtimes.com again, I can only pray they don’t break the phone app.)
This week has a wide slate of new releases, led primarily by dueling dino flicks in the Twilight Zone-esquethriller The End of Oak Street - reviews indicate it’s good! - and Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie. Among the rest, we have pretty positive reviews for neo-western The Rivals of Amziah King and lukewarm but positive reviews for Green Day themed comedy Nimrods. Nothing yet on sapphic slacker comedy The Wrong Girls with Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat or the other new releases - maybe make a point of catching Canadian comedy Gangsterism at MMOCA this Thursday or going to the Side Room Cinematheque program of Janicza Bravo penned projects.
Yes, we finally have dates for Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma in Madison, and I’ve hyped it a lot, but I’ve so far heard raves from my friends and trusted critics lucky enough to see it so far. I’m also pumped to see Matt Johnson’s Anthony Bourdain coming-of-age biopic Tony, Johnson’s follow-up to my favorite film of the year so far Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. He’s taking a pretty different approach, but, again, now that people have seen it, Tony is apparently good! If there’s anything else I’d be flagging as an interest, it’s the new comedy Spa Weekend from the Bad Moms directors.
We do actually have a pretty sweet rep lineup this next couple weeks. It seems like Texas Chainsaw Day will continue as long as people keep showing up - the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of the scariest and most effective horror movies I’ve ever. seen. Among the less-often-programmed films, I’d note East of Eden, Point Break, Little Shop of Horrors and Robocop at WUD, Kin-Dza-Dza, and Cinesthesia’s Lynch pick Wild at Heart. Looking ahead, coming up the weekend of 8/28, we’ll see the release of Coyote vs. Acme, The Dog Stars, Finding Emily, and (hopefully?) the return of UW Cinematheque!
